8 Simple Tips for Keeping Your Home Clean and Tidy in the New Year

Keeping a clean and tidy home can seem like an overwhelming task, but it doesn't have to be. By implementing a few simple habits and techniques, you can make the cleaning process more manageable and enjoyable. In this blog post, we'll be sharing 8 easy tips that can help you keep your home clean and tidy with minimal effort.

Make Your Bed

Making the bed first thing in the morning can set a positive tone for the day. Not only does it make your bedroom look neat and tidy, but it also gives you a sense of accomplishment. Starting the day with a small task completed can help boost motivation and productivity throughout the day.

Clean As You Go (CAYG)

When I worked in restaurants, my managers were always yelling this phrase at me and every time I heard it I wanted to pull my hair out.  Now that I have kids, animals, a full time job, and what feels like 0 me time it just makes sense!  Cleaning as you go can make your daily cleaning tasks much more manageable. Instead of letting dishes pile up in the sink or letting crumbs accumulate on the counter, take a few minutes to clean up as you cook or eat. This will save you time and energy in the long run.

Buy or Create a Cleaning Schedule

A cleaning schedule can help you stay on top of your cleaning tasks. Whether it's a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule, having a plan in place will make it easier to keep your home clean and tidy.  Having that same plan staring you down every time you walk past it helps hold you accountable.  You might be thinking "I know what needs done" and some might be able to just go do it.  For the others like myself, we need a constant reminder that those dishes aren't going to clean themselves.

For those with a family with small children, remember to give the kids things to do that are age appropriate.  Developing those habits early in life is key to helping your little ones create good habits for the rest of their lives.  If you are looking for an age appropriate chore list, here is a great resource that may be helpful for you!

One Room at a Time

One of my favorite sayings is: "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!"  Staring at a disaster of a dirty home is overwhelming, so break it down into smaller tasks.  Tackle one room or task at a time instead of trying to do everything at once. This will help you focus and make it less overwhelming. By completing one task before moving on to the next, you can give your full attention to each task, making it more efficient and effective.

Declutter Daily

Ever think to yourself "It isn't dirty, its just cluttered?"  Our last blog post talked about how to declutter a house one small task at a time.  Don’t let clutter build up. If you notice something that doesn't belong put it back where it goes immediately. Even if it's just a small item, putting it away right away can prevent it from becoming part of a larger clutter problem. This will also make it easier to keep your home clean and tidy.

Take Out the Trash

Having a trash can in every room is a great way to keep your home clean and tidy. Empty the trash regularly to prevent odors and keep your home free of clutter.

Keep the Laundry Off the Floor

When you take your clothes off, make sure they have a place to go.  A laundry basket is a great way to collect dirty clothes and keep them out of sight. Instead of letting clothes pile up on the floor or in a hamper, use a laundry basket to keep them organized and easy to transport to the washing machine.

Be Okay with "Clean Enough"

Unless you have unlimited time, energy, and patience your space will never be immaculate.  This is an unfortunate truth.  Even if you completely clean your home or room top to bottom and there is no more work to be done, within hours you'll notice there is more to be done.  The idea of having cleaned perfectly is unattainable and we need to be happy with "clean enough".  Your daily clean might have you vacuum the floors but you might be more inclined to shampoo the carpets before a big holiday.

Don't overdo it every day and create a high standard which can't be maintained.  Your daily chores need to be something you don't dread which take up all your free time.  The point of living is not to have a perfectly clean space, but your home should be a comfortable and healthy environment where you and your family can thrive.  Simply make sure you are clean enough and save the deep cleaning for special occasions.

A clean and tidy home is not only visually pleasing but also beneficial for mental and physical health. By following these 8 simple tips, you can make the cleaning process more manageable, and create a more comfortable and relaxing living space. Remember to make your bed first thing in the morning, clean as you go, have a designated place for everything, create a cleaning schedule, keep cleaning supplies easily accessible, use a laundry basket, tackle one room or task at a time, keep a trash can in every room, and don't let the clutter build up. With a little effort, you'll be able to create a home that is not only clean and tidy but also a sanctuary.
