Cupcakes have been a popular treat for quite some time, allowing people to enjoy a bite sized cake in a convenient packaging. Just like their bigger sister, cupcakes come in all flavors, colors, and shapes. Unlike their bigger sister, they are designed to be eaten in one sitting! Cupcakes are becoming increasingly popular in the world of decorating now too, as experienced pastry chefs are making exceedingly artistic designs on these small canvases. Today, I want to take you on a journey into the history and world of cupcakes. Let's discover some more about these deliciously sweet treats.
History of Cupcakes
The origin of the term cupcakes can be traced back to the late 18th century, but the exact date that they began to be made is unknown. These miniature cakes were originally baked in teacup and known as number cakes or 1234 cakes, because their original recipe was simple: 1 cupt of butter, 2 cups of sugar, 3 cups of flour, 4 eggs. You might be thinking, just as I did, that the term "cupcake" came around because they were originally made in cups. Nope! The term "cupcake" was first used in 1828, and it referred to the measurement of the ingredients used in the recipe. Cupcakes were popularized in the United States in the 19th century, and they were commonly served at birthday parties, weddings, and other special events.
Types of Cupcakes
Cupcakes come in various flavors and types, and they can be customized to suit any occasion. Here are some of the most popular types of cupcakes:
1. Vanilla Cupcakes
Vanilla cupcakes are a classic flavor that never goes out of style and are my personal favorites. These cupcakes have a light, fluffy texture and a delicate vanilla flavor typically from extract. These delicious treats are light and fluffy and allow you to add amazing flavors through the use of frostings and fondants, without overpowering the original vanill flavor. Vanilla typically just melds together with whatever flavors you add to create a great flavor that you will keep coming back to.
2. Chocolate Cupcakes
Chocolate cupcakes are a fan favorite as well. These cupcakes are rich, decadent, and can be customized with various toppings and fillings. My favorite thing to do with chocolate cupcakes is to fill them with jams and compotes and top with a light buttercream frosting.
3. Red Velvet Cupcakes
Red velvet cupcakes have a unique flavor and are instantly recognizable by their bright red color. These cupcakes are made with cocoa powder, buttermilk, and vinegar, which gives them their distinctive flavor and texture. I absolutely love these cupcakes as they are and refuse to make changes. 100% my favorite because of the cream cheese.
4. Fruit-flavored Cupcakes
Fruit-flavored cupcakes are perfect for summer and spring events. These cupcakes are made with fresh fruit puree or extract, giving them a burst of fruity flavor. Next time you are looking for a new twist on the cupcakes, try making a lemon flavored cake with a light citrus frosting and topped with yellow sugar crystals. This is probably my favorite treat in the summer.
Baking and Decorating Cupcakes
Baking and decorating cupcakes is an art form that requires practice and skill. I have been working on decorating cupcakes my whole life and I don't think I am even half as good as I want to be. None of my cupcakes are going to ever be featured on a TV show, but I am proud of what I create. Here are some of the essential tools to make your life easier starting out
1. Cupcake Liners
Cupcake liners come in various colors, patterns, and sizes, and they can be used to complement the cupcake's flavor and theme. You'd be surprised how easily the right pattern on a liner can elevate the design. If you want to go with a liner free look, you can always use an aluminum liner and peel it off after or spray your muffin tins before pouring the atter.
2. Frosting and Icing
Frosting and icing are the most important parts of decorating cupcakes. Start off with buttercream when you are new, this is the easiest to make and decorate with as well as the most forgiving when you make mistakes. Once you master the buttercream, move on to more difficult frostings.
3. Piping Bags and Tips
Piping bags and tips are used to create intricate designs and shapes on cupcakes. These tools come in various sizes and shapes, allowing decorators to create unique designs and patterns. There are thousands of different piping tips available, but start with a simple starter kit to make the simple designs like flowers, grass, and puffs. Spring for the reusable, silicon lined piping bags to make your life easier when you start off.
Cupcakes are a delicious and versatile dessert that can be customized to suit any occasion. Whether you're looking for a classic vanilla cupcake or an extravagant gourmet one, cupcakes are the perfect sweet treat for any celebration.
